Interactivity #1: Technology as Autobiography

According to Vanessa Domine, technology is “a way of thinking about information, knowledge, and the world at large” (Domine, 7). Technology is synonymous with knowledge. When reading about this assignment I thought about how technology has influenced my life through two perspectives: technology for general purposes and technology in the classroom. In general, the three most influential technologies in my life are the Internet, smart phones/cell phones, and social media. These general technologies help with both communication and mass communication. They also provide access to information and help to stay connected with friends and family on the Internet.
Technology can also be utilized in schools as an educational tool. The Internet has boundless amounts of information that can be helpful in getting material across. Three technologies that I think are important in the classroom are PowerPoint, online journals (like JSTOR), and through streaming videos such as those found on YouTube.  PowerPoint provides a visual aid for students and it is very accessible by providing a good amount of information. I believe that as a teacher I would utilize this technology to go over main ideas. I also feel like online journals are important because they are often peer-reviewed and provide credible sources.  Also, I like youtube.com (and other streaming media sites) because it is a fun way to get information. I use these technologies pretty often as a student, and hope to implement them in my classroom.
The video “Olivia’s Story”, presented a perspective on Olivia’s relationship to technology through her daily life and her education. In some ways, Olivia’s experience could resemble students’ involvement with technology in New Jersey. While watching this video Olivia lives in an urban area, she takes public transportation and has limited access to technology, but it is very important in her life. She uses a cell phone and social media sites to stay connected. When needed, she usually utilizes school computers and a computer in her apartment building. According to the video, a teacher stated that only 1/3 of her students had access to computers. Teachers must be understanding and knowledgeable about their students’ access to technology. Also, New Jersey has many urban areas/districts so her story can be relatable.
The second video we were required to watch was “Learning to Change, Changing to Learn” portrayed students and their relationships with technology. In general, the students depicted technology as improving their lives. A major component that the students all shared was using technology for communication and coordinating with people and group members. These students also felt that technology has helped them express themselves. They also discussed how technology makes things convenient for learning and easy to access for information. Students also discussed how technology has helped them improve their reading and writing skills.
Similarly to the videos, I feel technology has had a big impact on my life, both in general and academically. In school, the Internet and technological tools I discussed help facilitate learning.  For example, PowerPoint is a visual aid that helps get main ideas across. I feel this will be helpful, not only as a student, but as a teacher. Also, the typical use of technology in my life has improved my ability to communicate and stay connected with friends and family. Communication played an important role in the two videos. A major theme I saw in the videos was technology making things convenient and accessible.  The tools I discussed for educational purposes were not really addressed, but there were noticeably more similarities than differences. One of these similarities was making information easier to find.  I wish they addressed this topic more, in order to relate technology to the classroom.

  1. I agree about the role that PowerPoint plays in the classroom on the teachers end and the students end. PowerPoints are very useful for making bullet points of key ideas and facts and for making a visually stimulating presentation of information. You can even include hyperlinks and videos. It is also very user friendly for students to use for projects.

  2. Relating technology to information is important and I enjoyed the quote you opened your blog with. Using the computer can help students explore new things and find out more than they could from a book. I personally use JSTOR and other databases constantly for history papers. I would not be able to learn as much or gather as much information without the internet. I agree that teachers have to realize that not all students have the same access to technology. I think that technology does help students strive especially creatively. Using a visual aid to help students learn is definitely important. You do not want to just stand and lecture the whole class. Using technology will help engage students in your lessons.

  3. I agree that the Internet gives us all access to limitless amounts of information. Online journals and streaming videos are two contributors to this stream of knowledge. I am sure any college student will agree that online journals are indispensable when doing research. As you mentioned most are peer reviewed and you can be sure that the information is trustworthy.
YouTube is a great source for instructional videos. I myself use it for many art projects. It’s a simple way for me to learn a foreign process. I also use it to learn techniques that may be simpler than the ones I already use.
PowerPoint can deliver information in multiple ways because you can add charts, pictures and sound. You can share it with students so that they have can access to the information on their own time. They can also be printed out for students who don’t have access to a computer at home. On the flip side there is a downside to using PowerPoint. We have all sat through a presentation where there were so many words on the screen it caused the presentation to be boring.

  4. Paige,

I think technology has certainly made accessing information and data convenient and easy. I like that you brought up the fact that online academic sources are not only convenient, but they are credible. Everything on the internet of course is not reliable or factually accurate which can be a major concern when conducting research. It is nice to know that through EBSCO and jSTOR, we have access to reliable and credible sources. I am a history major so I use these sites extensively in my classes. It gives me peace of mind to know that I am quoting and getting information from dependable sources. Also, I sometimes am in awe of how great technology is for staying in touch with people. I have a few European friends and I can honestly say that if it weren't for FB, I would not have been able to maintain these friendships the way I can. I am so happy to know my friends from abroad and FB has allowed me to stay in contact with them and I am grateful for that.
